The Truth About Cats and Dogs

The question is often asked - Do cats and dogs actually like each other?

During the week they were talking about this in the office - “how do I get my cat to sit next to the dog for a photo?”, “ My dog chases the cat continuously”, “How do I make the dog and cat like each other?”.

Well here is the truth of it.

We dogs are territorial by nature, so if we’re here first, then it all belongs to us.  Whereas, cats just think everything belongs to them.

Dogs are loyal creatures who would follow our masters till the end.  Whereas, cats do not follow anything, except their own desire for comfort.

Now, I am sure the cats of this world will have a completely different purrrr-spective on this, but the fact remains the same – dogs are territorial and cats are dictatorial!!

It is not that we dogs do not like sharing, because in most cases, we successfully share our space with cats, ferrets, hens and assorted other house mates.  It is more a question of attitude, and who has the biggest ego?  ( I think we all  know the answer to this!!).

I challenge you to name one other animal who would dare to put their tail in the air and then place their bottom in your face as they strut passed your nose?  That sort of behaviour is unique to the cat!

So, how should you introduce us to each other?  Quietly, respectfully and with your own emotions in check (no added anxiety is needed).  Let us work out the rest.

And yes, there may be an initial bit of shuffling and side stepping around each other, the odd chase and even maybe a paw swipe, but that is just us negotiating the terms of living together.

We dogs are an adorable animal with a huge capacity to love and that even includes cats like Raven and all his friends!!

Forever Mommy

This photo reminded me of my Mom.

I still remember the feel of her heartbeat as I lay beside her with those squiggly brothers and sisters of mine, who used to jump all over me in the scramble to get to her at meal times.

As we grew, I recall Mom growling at us when we were up to mischief or nipping each other as we squeaked our first yelps.  She taught us our doggie manners.

My Mommy’s comforting licks and her advice about living with a forever family are still in my heart.  In fact, growing up I thought it would be very odd not to be part of a big paw family, but that was before I knew how much I’d love living with Mr and Mrs T.

They appeared one day and picked me out from all the rest.  They looked at me and made some very strange awwwww noises and then said “we love him”.

Mrs T cuddled me in tight and then nearly kissed me to death.  I loved her instantly.

When I met the rest of the family they took turns at picking me up and cuddling me.  At one stage, I thought I was never going to be left alone to take more than one step at a time.

Coming to my new home was fun and I worked hard to be a good dog-son even though there was a lot to learn for a wee pupster; like where to pee and not to pee.  I am proud to say I mastered that after a few days -even though Mr T says he does not remember it being that quick J

But what I learnt most was, forever families are really important and being part of one makes a dog’s life perfect!

My forever Mom is adorable and I want to wish her and every other pet Mommy a very happy Mother’s day and say, thank you for choosing us to be part of your family.

Now off to get my eCard to send to Mrs T - click here to send one to your mum too!

Track and Chase

Written by Sam at Rachael Hale® on May 4th, 2012.      0 comments

Lola proudly announced to Tabby and I that she is now a Tracking dog.

Trying hard not to raise our eyebrows, we asked her how this had come about.  She sweetly informed us that she had been given a tracking number for her purchases from the www.rachaelhale.com online shop and she was tracking it daily.

We tried hard not to laugh!  The tracking number made Lola feel very important and quite grown up, but it turned her into the most impatient puppy of all time.

There was pacing, there was chewing of shoes, there was unexplained puddles and there was scratching at the office door to see if the post had arrived.  Not a delivery truck went un-noticed; they each got a bark as they drove by.

But today, the waiting was over.  The delivery man had stopped, and a large parcel was making its way up the office stairs in the direction of a not so quietly waiting puppy.

Lola was leaping and chasing her tail around in circles with excitement.  Her purchases would be in her hot little paws within minutes, or so she thought…

As she pounced at the package that had her name written on it in big bold print, the mailman stopped her in her tracks.  “Madam” he said, “you must sign for this!”

Now, there’s a hitch we had not anticipated.  No one had taught Lola to sign her name!

He handed her a pen, which she stared at in bewilderment before letting out a loud whimper that could be heard all up the street.

Tabby was quick to act, and with pen in claw she leant across and scribbled her catograph on the delivery receipt.

Lola, no longer the tracker dog, with not so much as even a bark of thanks to her pen pal Tabby, grabbed the parcel and raced away, ripping off the paper that stood between her and her purchases, as she ran.
